Choosing a steam generator: home or commercial

The generator sits outside the room, usually in a cupboard, ceiling void or plant room, and feeds steam through a steam head inside. It needs a power supply, a water feed and a drain line. An electric steam generator is sized by room volume and wall material: tiled masonry rooms need more output than acrylic or glass enclosures of the same size. • Showers and small cabins. Small units, such as a 3kW or 4kW steam generator, are typical for a steam shower conversion or a compact cabin. This collection currently has 2.2 kW and 4.5 kW models at the small end. Compact 3 kW and 4 kW steam generators for steam showers and small cabins are available on request.
• Home rooms. A 6kW steam generator or 9kW steam generator suits many villa rooms and a home hammam, depending on size and finish.
• Large and venue rooms. Gyms, hotels and spas use a 12kW or 15kW steam generator, or a commercial steam generator with controls built for long hours. Both sizes are in the collection.

What to check before you order

On site, the unit needs a dedicated power supply, a cold water feed with an isolation valve and a drain line. Where the water is hard, a softener helps reduce scale. The steam head goes low on the wall inside the room, away from where people sit, and the unit should sit within the distance the manufacturer allows from the room, with access for descaling and servicing.

Before you order, have ready:

• Room length, width and height, and the wall, ceiling and door finishes.
• The power available at your board, and its phase.
• Where the unit will sit, and its distance from the room.
• The water feed, the drain, and whether a softener is fitted.

Replacing an old unit? Note the kW rating, voltage and control panel from the rating plate. Keeping the same output means the existing cable and isolator stay suitable.

Check the controls too. Many units come with a panel that sits outside the room and sets temperature and session time, and some can also be controlled over Wi-Fi. Make sure the panel position, cable length and any lighting or fragrance options suit your room before you order.
