Steam generator guide
How to choose and size a steam room generator
The steam room generator decides how well a steam room performs. This guide explains how to size one for your room, what it needs in water, drainage and power, and how to keep it working in Dubai conditions.
Compare steam generatorsHow to size a steam room generator (kW vs room volume and finish)
Whether you are building a new steam room or replacing a tired unit, size comes first. Generator output is rated in kilowatts (kW), and the right rating depends on the room volume and how much heat the walls, floor and ceiling absorb. Compact 3 kW and 4 kW steam generators for steam showers and small cabins are available on request.
Step 1: measure the volume
Multiply the internal length, width and height in metres. A room 2.4 m by 1.8 m with a 2.3 m ceiling has a volume of about 9.9 m³. Measure to the underside of the ceiling, including any space above a glass header.
Step 2: adjust for the finish
Every manufacturer publishes a sizing table that lists the maximum room volume for each model, usually split by wall type. Acrylic and lightweight panels allow a bigger room per kW. Tile on a backer board allows less. Natural stone, marble and solid block walls allow the least, because they soak up heat before the air warms. Glass walls and external walls also count against the room.
Step 3: check the details
Long steam lines, high ceilings, heated benches, frequent door opening and commercial use all push towards a larger unit. Pick the model whose rated volume for your wall type covers your room with some margin.
A steam generator calculator on a manufacturer's website does exactly these three steps. The figures only hold for that brand, so always use the table for the model you will buy. When you know your size, browse steam generators for sale in our shop.
A home steam room generator for a small tiled ensuite room is a very different unit from a commercial steam room generator for a gym. Commercial models are built for long daily running, usually include automatic flushing and heavier components, and are sized with more margin for door opening and back-to-back sessions.
Water feed, drain, softener and steam head placement
A steam generator for steam room use needs four services, and each one should be planned before the walls are closed.
- Cold water feed. A dedicated supply with an isolation valve, so the unit can be serviced without shutting off the bathroom.
- Drain. A drain connection at the generator for flushing and emptying the tank. Without it, automatic flushing cannot be used and scale builds faster.
- Softener or scale filter. Water treatment on the generator feed slows scale build-up on the heating elements and level sensors.
- Electrical supply. A dedicated circuit sized to the generator rating. The written scope states whether we or your own electrician provide it.
Generator location
The generator sits outside the steam room in a dry, ventilated, accessible place: a cupboard, plant room or ceiling void with an access hatch. Keep the steam line within the length the manufacturer allows, insulate it and run it so condensate drains back towards the generator or the steam head, never pooling in a dip.
Steam head placement
Mount the steam head low on the wall, away from benches and feet, and never where someone can sit in front of it. Place the temperature sensor away from the steam head and above head height so it reads the room, not the steam jet. The same rules apply to steam shower generators, where the enclosure is smaller and the steam head is closer to the user.
Controls and timers
The control panel sets temperature and session length and, on many models, lighting, aroma pumps and the flushing cycle. Points to compare:
- Session timer and auto-off. Every home controller should switch off after a set time.
- Remote sensor. A separate sensor gives a more accurate reading than one built into the panel.
- Automatic flushing. Drains and rinses the tank after use or on a schedule, which helps with scale.
- App and Wi-Fi control. Lets you preheat the room before you arrive home.
- Commercial scheduling. Opening hours, booking blocks and lock-outs for gyms and hotels.
Mount the panel at a comfortable height, inside the room or just outside the door, out of the direct steam and shower spray.
A note on terms: dry steam generator is a phrase some suppliers use for units that deliver steam carrying very little water, and others use it loosely for sauna heaters with a steam function. Neither is a standard category, so ask for the actual specification and sizing table before you buy.
Brands we install
We install all major sauna and steam heater brands, in new rooms and existing ones. For steam that means makers such as Steamist, Mr Steam, Tylo, Helo, Harvia, Klafs and EOS; Sawo and Huum complete the list on the sauna side. We are not a dealer or partner for any of them, so the recommendation follows the room.
People often ask which is the best steam generator. There is no single answer, because the best steam room generator for one project depends on room volume and finish, the controls you want, where the unit will sit, how often the room runs and the water treatment available. A compact unit with simple controls can be right for an ensuite, while a gym needs a commercial model with automatic flushing.
When comparing models, check:
- the manufacturer's maximum room volume for your wall type
- whether the control panel and sensor are included
- whether automatic flushing is available
- the electrical supply the unit needs
- the space needed for installation and service access
Maintenance and descaling in Dubai
Scale is what shortens a generator's life. Minerals in mains water stay behind when water boils, coating the heating elements and level sensors. As scale builds up, output falls, the unit trips its safety cut-out and elements fail early.
A simple routine keeps a generator running:
- Use automatic flushing if the unit has it, with the drain connected.
- Treat the feed water with a softener or scale filter and replace cartridges or salt as required.
- Descale on schedule using the method and interval the manufacturer sets.
- Check elements and sensors during servicing, before they fail.
- Keep the steam head clear of scale and debris.

What size steam room generator do I need?
Work out the internal volume of the room in cubic metres, then check the manufacturer's sizing table for your wall type. Acrylic rooms need the least output per cubic metre, tiled rooms more and stone or marble rooms the most. Add margin for long steam lines, high ceilings, glass walls and heavy use. Use the table for the exact model you plan to buy.
How does a steam generator calculator work?
It multiplies the room's length, width and height to get the volume, then applies a correction for the wall finish and sometimes for ceiling height, glass and external walls. The result is matched to the model whose rated volume covers your room. Calculators are brand-specific, so use the one, or the sizing table, from the manufacturer whose generator you will install.
Which is the best steam room generator for a home?
The right unit is the one sized correctly for your room volume and finish, with the controls you want, a location that can be serviced and water treatment on the feed. Brand matters less than correct sizing and installation. Because we install all major brands, we can choose the unit on fit rather than on one maker.
Where should a steam generator be installed?
Outside the steam room, in a dry, ventilated and accessible place such as a cupboard, plant room or ceiling void with an access hatch. It needs a cold water feed with an isolation valve, a drain for flushing and a dedicated electrical circuit. Keep the steam line within the manufacturer's maximum length and insulate it along its run.
Does a steam generator need a water softener?
It is strongly worth fitting one. Minerals in mains water leave scale on the heating elements and level sensors, which reduces output and shortens element life. A softener or scale filter on the generator feed, combined with automatic flushing and descaling at the manufacturer's interval, keeps the unit working for longer between services and repairs.
Can I buy a generator online and have it installed?
Yes. Website prices are in UAE dirhams, VAT and any delivery charges are shown at checkout, and you can pay securely through Mamo checkout. Installation is quoted separately, because it depends on where the generator sits, the water, drain and electrical connections and the state of the room. Electrical work and other trades are included only when the written scope says so.
