Gym fit out Dubai: from the training floor to the recovery zone
A gym fit out in Dubai has to handle heavy equipment, loud music, high cooling loads and members who now expect a sauna and an ice bath after training. Euphorium plans gyms around that recovery zone and works alongside your fit-out contractor and MEP engineer. Every responsibility is set out in a written project scope before work starts.
Send your gym fit-out briefWhat a gym fit-out covers: design, flooring, acoustics and MEP
We plan the recovery side of the gym and the commercial sauna supply behind it, and coordinate the rest of the fit-out with the trades you appoint. A commercial gym fit out normally covers four areas:
- Design and layout. Zoning for free weights, machines, functional training, studios, changing rooms and the recovery zone, with clear walking routes between them. Good gym interior design also covers lighting, mirrors, storage and where members wait between sessions.
- Flooring. Rubber or impact flooring under free weights, sprung or studio flooring for classes, and slip-resistant, drained floors in wet areas.
- Acoustics. Dropped weights and music carry through slabs and walls, which matters in towers and hotels with neighbours above and below.
- MEP. Cooling for a full room in summer, fresh air, power for treadmills, saunas and chillers, and water and drainage for showers, steam and plunge tubs.
Whether you hire a single gym designer or one of the gym design companies that run the whole project, ask them to plan the recovery zone at the start. Saunas need power and ventilation; plunge tubs need water, drainage and space for a chiller. Adding them after the ceiling and floor are finished costs time and usually means opening up finished work.
Changing rooms and showers deserve the same attention as the training floor. Members move from the changing area to the recovery zone and back, so put showers on that route, allow enough drainage for the busiest hour, and place doors and lockers so wet traffic stays off the gym floor.
We only take on electrical work, ventilation or other trades where the written scope names them. Everything else stays with your fit-out contractor and MEP engineer, and the scope says so line by line.
The recovery zone: two saunas, two plunge tubs and red light
A typical commercial package is two saunas, two ice baths and red light therapy. In a gym, a pair of each keeps the zone open when one room is being cleaned or serviced, and cuts the queue after peak classes.
- Sauna for gym use. A gym sauna runs for long hours with frequent door openings, so the heater, controls and benches are chosen for that duty. Gym sauna installation needs a dedicated power supply, ventilation and a shower close by.
- Cold plunge. A plunge tub that members use every day needs filtration, sanitation and a chiller sized for that traffic. See our page on the ice bath for gyms for tub and chiller options.
- Red light. Panels or booths sit in a dry corner of the zone and need power and a clean wall. Compare formats on our red light page.
- Optional extras. Larger clubs and hotel gyms add steam rooms, which need a sealed tiled room, a floor drain and a steam generator in a plant space.
Plan the recovery room so members walk into it straight from the changing area: wet areas grouped together, a shower between the sauna and the plunge tubs, benches to sit on between rounds, and a clock on the wall. People use the space to warm up, cool down and relax after training, so keep the layout simple enough to use without staff help.
Recovery zone lessons from a working club: Rejuven8
Commercial recovery is not a villa fit-out, and Rejuven8 Wellness Club in Dubai Marina shows why. The club's ice baths kept shutting down, and we traced the problem to three fit-out decisions: chillers placed in the ceiling void, an incorrect electrical design that caused recurring cooling shutdowns, and residential filtration in a commercial facility.
We moved the chillers to a serviceable outdoor plant, gave each chiller its own isolator and MCB, and redesigned the 30 m hydraulic run for commercial flow rates. The club's 12,000 litres now hold 4°C in continuous operation, with no bagged ice and no thermal covers. The Rejuven8 case study walks through each change.
For a gym fit-out, the lesson is simple: give the recovery zone its own plant space, its own protected circuits and filtration sized for member traffic, on the first drawing rather than after opening.
“Euphorium is very experienced with chiller systems and I would trust them and their company to do any of our work in future.”

Gyms, hotels and residential towers
We plan commercial sauna supply for hotels, gyms, spas, clubs and developments. The fit-out brief changes with the venue.
Independent and chain gyms
Member numbers drive everything. Size the recovery zone for the busiest hour, not the daily average, and put it where members can reach it without crossing the training floor in wet sandals. Two commercial gym setup ideas worth considering: sell recovery as a separate membership tier, and place the sauna and plunge area where prospective members see it on a tour.
Boutique studios
Small studios rarely have room for two saunas. In gym studio design, a compact wet area can still take one sauna, one plunge tub and a red light panel, with sessions booked around them.
Hotels
Hotel gyms and spas share guests, so the recovery zone often sits between the two. Finishes have to match the hotel interior, noise has to stay away from guest rooms, and operating hours are long.
Residential towers and developments
Amenity gyms in towers are often unstaffed. Controls with timers, clear signage, and equipment the facility team can clean and isolate easily matter more than the size of the room.
Sports academies and clubs
Academies and clubs often run training in blocks, so the recovery zone sees a rush after each session and long quiet periods in between. Plan seating, showers and towel storage for the size of a full squad, and choose controls that staff can switch on ahead of each block.
Client and collaboration logos we show are used with written permission, including Jumeirah, Rejuven8 and Magic Pro Sports Academy.
Commercial gym design ideas for the wet and dry zones
These commercial gym design ideas come up on almost every project brief:
- Put the wet areas on one side of the floor plan so drainage and waterproofing are concentrated in one place.
- Leave a ventilated plant space for chillers and steam generators, with service access that does not close the zone.
- Use a glass front on each sauna so staff can see inside without opening the door.
- Put lockers, a towel drop and showers on the route into the recovery zone.
- Run separate circuits for sauna heaters so a fault does not shut down the training floor.
- Choose finishes that tolerate sweat, chlorine and daily cleaning.
- Keep the loudest equipment and the speakers away from the recovery zone.
- Give the zone its own air conditioning control, because heat from the saunas should not warm the training floor.
- Add hooks, a water station and a towel bin inside the zone so members do not walk back out mid-session.
Choosing who designs and builds the gym
Gym owners usually take one of three routes:
- Design and build. One company designs the gym and manages the fit-out. It is simple to manage, but check who designs the wet areas and who is responsible for each interface.
- Designer plus contractor. An interior designer draws the gym and a fit-out contractor builds it. Specialist rooms such as saunas, steam rooms and plunge tubs are then supplied as separate packages.
- Operator-led. Chains with in-house standards issue their own brand guidelines and appoint each package directly.
On every route, the recovery zone is easiest to manage when one party owns the saunas, plunge tubs and red light, and the written scope says exactly where that work stops and the fit-out contractor's work begins. Design, equipment and contractor responsibilities are confirmed in a written project scope before fabrication or installation. We coordinate Dubai Municipality, Civil Defence and DEWA approvals for commercial installs. Our technicians are Canadian-trained and we build to Canadian standards.
Useful things to send with your brief:
- Floor plan or photos, with ceiling heights and the position of existing drains.
- Expected members at the busiest hour, and daily opening hours.
- Available power at the board and any planned upgrade.
- The rooms you want: saunas, plunge tubs, red light, steam, showers.
- Your target opening date and who else is appointed: designer, MEP engineer, fit-out contractor.
Process and timeline
- Send your brief: floor plan, photos, member numbers, opening hours and what you want in the recovery zone.
- We return an initial estimate for the recovery zone and the parts of the fit-out you want us to plan.
- After you approve the estimate, we visit the site to confirm the power at the board, the ventilation route, the drains and the delivery access.
- We issue a written quotation and project scope listing design, equipment and contractor responsibilities.
- Fabrication and installation follow the agreed programme, coordinated with your other trades.
Already have drawings, a BOQ or an RFP from your designer or MEP engineer? Send those instead of a brief. We return a quotation, a capability statement and a procurement pack with licences, insurance and references within 48 hours of receiving them.
The overall programme is site-specific and written into the quotation. Within it, the saunas have fixed lead times: 7 business days for a custom-built sauna and 4 weeks for a factory-built one. Each sauna carries a 2-year warranty and each ice bath a 1-year warranty.
Commercial wellness installations typically cost AED 250,000-580,000; multi-tub commercial ice bath setups AED 80,000-250,000; single wellness rooms up to AED 150,000 or more.
Under a maintenance contract we respond within 24-48 hours, with same-day emergency dispatch for commercial sites (30-50% premium). Residential same-day visits carry no extra charge. Emergencies are triaged at any time. Our commercial multi-tub setups are built for 50+ uses a day without water-quality drift.

How long does a gym fit out in Dubai take?
It depends on the size of the space, the condition of the shell and how many trades are involved, so timelines are site-specific and confirmed in the written quotation. Within that programme, custom saunas are built in 7 business days and factory-built saunas take 4 weeks. Planning the recovery zone at the start avoids reopening finished ceilings and floors later.
What goes into a gym recovery zone?
A typical commercial package is two saunas, two ice baths and red light therapy. Larger clubs and hotel gyms often add a steam room. The zone also needs showers, seating, drainage, ventilation and a plant space for chillers and generators, so draw it into the fit-out plan from day one rather than adding it later.
Do you handle the whole fit-out or only the recovery zone?
We plan the gym with you and deliver the saunas, plunge tubs, red light and related wellness rooms. Flooring, acoustic work, electrical work, ventilation and other trades are included only when the written scope says so. Where your fit-out contractor or MEP engineer handles them, we coordinate the interfaces and list every responsibility in the written project scope.
Can a residential sauna cabin be used in a gym?
Not just because the seat count looks right. A gym sauna runs for long hours with frequent door openings, so check the manufacturer's intended use, operating duty, controls, cleanability and warranty terms first. For most gyms, a room sized and specified for the busiest hour is the safer choice.
What do you need from us to estimate a gym project?
Send a floor plan or photos, the space size, expected members at the busiest hour, opening hours, available power and what you want in the recovery zone. With that we return an initial estimate. Once you approve the initial estimate, we schedule a site visit to confirm services, access and interfaces before the written quotation.
Do you work on gyms outside Dubai?
Yes. Dubai is our main service area, and Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah are covered according to the product or by appointment. Send your brief with the emirate and address, and the written quotation confirms delivery, installation and timeline for that site.
