A red light therapy panel should be compared with measurements and documents, not LED count alone. Ask for wavelength bands, irradiance at a stated distance, coverage uniformity, timer/control behavior, electrical ratings, cooling, warranty and the exact intended use printed in the manufacturer documentation.
Six specifications that change the decision
- Wavelength: confirm the stated red and near-infrared bands and whether every wavelength can be controlled independently.
- Irradiance: a power-density number is incomplete without measurement distance and method.
- Coverage: peak output in the centre does not prove uniform output across the treatment area.
- Controls: verify timer limits, channel controls, presets, lockout and commercial duty cycle.
- Electrical and heat: confirm voltage, current, plug, circuit demand, ventilation and ambient limits.
- Documentation: request instructions, test reports, warranty terms, serial identification and destination-market compliance.
Red light versus near-infrared
Both terms describe parts of the optical spectrum, but a product name alone does not tell you output, dose or intended use. Treat a wavelength label as one input in a complete specification. Do not copy medical claims from another device with different output or regulatory clearance.
Commercial-room checklist
| Area | Verify before purchase |
|---|---|
| Room | Clearances, ventilation, cleaning surfaces, privacy and access |
| Mounting | Rated brackets, wall structure, tip protection and cable routing |
| Operations | Session timing, staff training, user screening and documented cleaning |
| Service | Replaceable components, diagnostics, spare parts and local/international support |
Claims and evidence
Photobiomodulation devices marketed for medical purposes can fall under medical-device rules. The FDA draft guidance for photobiomodulation devices describes testing and labeling considerations; it does not mean every red light product is FDA cleared. Confirm the exact model and intended use rather than relying on a supplier-wide badge.
